The confessional box is one of the final places on the face of the earth where you can pour out your heart without fear of retribution or exposure, and I believe for this reason more and more people are forsaking the "communal forgiveness" that is contained each week during regular Sunday Mass, and opting instead for the much more intensely personal experience of sitting down in a tiny dark room with genitals begged and stomach clawed, and confessing to a Priest after God!
